Benjamin B. Spratling III is a partner in the law firm of Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker.
He received his law degree (J.D.) from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1971 and his undergraduate degree
(B.S., Economics) from Auburn University in 1967. He also received a Master's degree (LL.M, Taxation) in 1982
from the University of Alabama School of Law.
Mr. Spratling is a former adjunct instructor of Business Law at the University of Alabama at Birmingham,
a member of the Sections of Business Law and Intellectual Property Law of the American Bar Association
and the chairman of the History and Archives Committee of the Alabama State Bar.
He has served as a member of the Permanent Code Commission of the Alabama State Bar, chairman of the Judicial
and Legal Reform Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association, co-chair of the Professional Ethics Committee of
the Birmingham Bar Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, a nonvoting
member of the Alabama House of Representatives, and a member of the Governing Council of the Alabama Law Institute.
From 1992 to 1994, Spratling was president of the Alabama Genealogical Society (AGS) and continues to serve
on the Editorial Board of the AGS Magazine and as legal advisor to AGS. He is the author of the "Court
and Legal Records" chapter of Printed Sources: A Guide to Published Genealogical Records (Salt
Lake City: Ancestry Inc., 1998). He attended IGHR from 1989 through 1991 and has been a Course 5 Coordinator since 2005.
