The AJTA Alumni Foundation has established an endowment at Cumberland for editorial board scholarships. Board members and contributors have given over $16,000 to date. If you are interested in supporting the Journal by sponsoring a cash award or scholarship, please contact the Journal office, (205) 726-2959 or jtrialad@samford.edu, or write the AJTANAF at P.O. Box 59124, Birmingham, Alabama, 35259. Please consider a financial donation to Cumberland, earmarked for the Journal. Contact the Journal or the Cumberland Alumni Office, (205) 726-2444, for more information. Journal alumni and members have looked for ways to combine current members' need for guidance with the desire of alumni to be helpful and connected in a meaningful way to their legacy at the Journal. The "Finger on the Pulse" (F.O.P.) was launched in 2002 to address this puzzle. Not just another program to fill everyone's calendar with more meetings, the F.O.P. is a process by which Journal members learn to keep their "finger on the pulse" of what is important to practicing attorneys. This has the added benefit of improving the quality and quantity of materials published in the Journal by actively involving all members in the solicitation of manuscripts. The F.O.P. is intended (1) to equip members in a way no other law school experience does with the current-event knowledge and networking skills to give them a significant advantage in the job market and beyond, and (2) to introduce them to the heretofore untapped resource of skilled trial professionals in the growing base of Journal alumni (a.k.a. networking). In 2002, the F.O.P. set aside a bulletin board for members share current news pieces, internet postings, and topic ideas and read what's important to today's practicing attorney. Each Fall, the Journal begins its mentor program that pairs Journal alumni with a member of their choosing to mentor, with a minimum time commitment over the entire semester. Watch your mail for an initial letter each July asking for volunteers. The Program launches each September with a Wine & Cheese at a local law firm to introduce mentors and students. When you are asked to participate in the F.O.P. mentor program, please do so enthusiastically! Perhaps the program will provide networking opportunities for you as well. And, hopefully, the F.O.P. will introduce more practically informed Journal graduates into the future job market. Call for Articles The AJTA is always looking for practical, scholarly articles - from a plaintiff or defense perspective - that will be of interest to our national audience. If you would like an Articles Editor to contact you - or someone you know - email us at jtrialad@samford.edu. Let us know what topic you have in mind and which of three annual deadlines you might be able to meet: April 15, August 15, and December 15. Write
a Guest Column We invite any alumnus who wishes to impart some tidbit of wisdom or humor to our membership to write a brief 1-2 paragraph guest column for the Journal's bi-monthly membership newsletter. If you are interested, send your remarks to jtrialad@samford.edu or call Lynda in the Journal office.
