Admission Instructions for Evening Students
Please read the instructions before filling out forms. The
recommendation form is in Adobe Acrobat format. The

It is expected that students who enter this program will
have been out of high school for three years and are unable
to enroll in the day program due to work schedules, family
concerns or other reasons. Metro Programs is the name of the
administrative office which serves adult evening students.
We can assist with academic advising, admissions, and other
areas of concern. Please feel free to contact the Metro Programs
office at 726-2898.
All students who wish to attend Samford University should
complete an application for admission. Completed applications
and related documents must be mailed to the following address:
The Office of Admission, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama
35229. If you are a former Samford University student but
have not attended classes for 12 months or more and have not
attended another university in the interim, you must complete
a Readmission Application. If you are a former Samford University
student and have attended another institution in the interim,
you must complete a Readmission Transfer Application.
Although there is no formal admissions deadline, applicants
are encouraged to complete this process as soon as possible.
Since the admission application is connected to other important
procedures such as applying for financial aid, unnecessarily
delaying your application may have adverse effects. Please
allow adequate time for collecting all items related to your
admission application, including official transcripts from
your previous college or high school work.

Essay Considerations
Whether typed or handwritten, please tell us about yourself,
your academic background, and collegiate ambitions. We are
particularly interested in why you are applying to Samford
University. Please attach the essay to the application. The
essay is required unless applying under the special status
classification.
Admission under the Special Status Classification
- Special status is a non- degree seeking classification.
Students may consider the special status option for the following
reasons:
1) time constraints prevent the completion of the regular
application process prior to a desired term
2) a desire to take courses for credit but no interest in
earning a bachelors degree at the present time (regardless
of whether or not they already hold a bachelors degree).
To apply as a special status student, please submit the following
items to the Office of Admission:
1) Admission application. Please check the Special Status
classification on the application form. The application
may be submitted without the reference forms and essay.
2) Application fee: $25.00 (non-refundable)
3) If you attended college within the last 12 months, please
request a letter of good standing from the institution. Otherwise,
no transcripts are required to apply under the special status
classification.
Most students admitted under the special status classification
wish to eventually change the status to a regular, degree
seeking classification. In order to initiate a change of status,
students must complete a Change
of Status form and submit it to the Metro Programs office.
In order to be re-classified, a student must meet the admission
conditions of either a transfer student or an entering freshman
and supply the additional required information to the Office
of Admission.
Restrictions of the Special Status Classification:
1) Students currently under suspension from another institution
may not attend Samford University until the suspension period
imposed by the previous institution has expired.
2) Special status students are ineligible to receive federally
funded financial aid.
3) Special status applicants must have been graduated from
high school for three or more years.
4) Only 18 credit hours earned as a special status student
will count towards a Samford degree program.
(Each academic department reserves the right to determine
the acceptability of credits earned under this classification.)
5) Credit earned as a special status student will not count
towards a graduate degree.

from Special Status to a Degree-Seeking option:

Admission under the Audit Classification
As an alternative to full participation in a credit course,
students may "audit" the course. Auditors do not
receive grades and do not usually participate in the examinations;
however, instructors have the option of establishing requirements
for a satisfactory audit. Students are not permitted to audit
courses numbered above 400. To apply for admission as an auditor,
please submit the following items to the Office of Admission:
1) Audit admission application. The Audit admission application
is not the regular, evening program application form but is
a separate form which may be obtained in either the Metro Programs Office or the Office of Admission.
2) Application fee: $25.00 (non-refundable)
Auditors must submit an audit status registration form
to the Student Records Office in order to properly register
under this classification. Please contact the Student Records
Office at (205) 726-2911 for further information.
