Step Sing began as a sing-along on the steps of Renfroe Hall at the Howard College in East Lake Campus in 1951. It was held once a semester and soon became a competition. In 1957, Howard College moved to it’s present location on Lakeshore Drive, bring with it the tradition of Step Sing. In 1976, Step Sing moved to it’s current home in the Wright Center. Under the direction of Student Affairs, Step Sing is organized by students, including music arrangement, choreography, and costume design. Step Sing has become an educational activity in which students participate through leadership development, organizational administration and time management. Students perform three nights to sold out audiences. It continues to be one of Samford’s most popular traditions and is a popular event not only among students, but also prospective students, employees, alumni, and the Birmingham community.  

Each fall, first year Samford students are not only welcomed into the campus Samford family community, but are also introduced to the city of Birmingham and surrounding communities. A concert on the quad called Your School, Your City kicks off this week for all new and returning undergraduate and graduate students. Local business and restaurants surround the concert stage with tents showcasing Birmingham and what the city has to offer. Other activities take lace throughout the week on Ben Brown Plaza and other campus locations help students make friends and learn more about becoming involved and finding their place withinin the Samford community.

Each year, Samford students welcome their families and alumni to campus to celebrate homecoming. There are campus events all week on Ben Brown Plaza, a concert and bonfire, pep rally and a parade. Alumni and student groups gather on the quad for the biggest tailgating experience of the football season immediately following the parade. Thousands join us for this traditional event to cheer on the bulldogs

At the start of each Christmas season, the quad is lined with hundred of luminaries lighting the way to a large Christmas tree on Centennial Walk. A brief ceremony includes the Christmas story and singing carols, culminating in the tree lighting. More than 1,000 students and guests form the community gather for this event, helping to unite the Samford community.
