Several of you have asked about time off in order to help with volunteer efforts going on in our community. We discussed this today in Dr. Westmoreland's cabinet meeting and decided on the following:
In light of the extraordinary damage caused by the storms of April 27, 2011, Samford University is going to offer 2 paid service days to all full time staff employees. These days must be used between last Thursday, April 28 and Thursday, June 30, 2011. The two service days must be used in the disaster relief effort related to the 4/27 storms in the state of Alabama and in the service of people (other than the serving employee) affected by those storms.
The service days must be approved by your supervisor, and taken at a mutually acceptable time so as not to disrupt our normal operations. You will also be required to complete a Tornado Relief Service Day Request Form which must be signed by someone in a position of leadership of the organization for which you are volunteering at the service site (i.e., Samford, your church, Red Cross, etc.). A copy of this form will be available on-line through our Human Resources website in the next couple of days. If you have questions about eligibility or other details, please contact Fred Rogan, Director of Human Resources.
Seeing the response of our colleagues to this tragedy renews my hope. I hope each of you will take advantage of this time off to serve others in a meaningful way. Please see the daily updates to the list of ways you can be involved on our home page at http://www.samford.edu/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=6442468436, and stay tuned to periodic updates from Renie Moss, Assistant Dean of Campus Life, who is doing a great job of organizing ways we can help.
