Each year, Cumberland School of Law announces faculty recipients of several prestigious awards.
Lightfoot, Franklin & White Faculty Scholarship Award
The Lightfoot, Franklin & White Faculty Scholarship Award is given to a faculty member on the basis of scholarship. When choosing the recipient, the selection committee considers clarity of expression, thoroughness of research and analysis, scope and depth of subjects covered, difficulty and complexity of analysis, originality of study, and the actual or likely impact of the work.
The recipient for 2021-2022 is Lucille Stewart Beeson Professor of Law Paul Kuruk. Kuruk was selected for his bookTraditional Knowledge, Genetic Resources, Customary Law and Intellectual Property: A Global Primer (Edward Elger Publishing, 2020).
Harvey S. Jackson Excellence in Teaching Award
The Harvey S. Jackson Excellence in Teaching Award is awarded annually to faculty members for their mastery of subject matter, their ability to convey information effectively to students, their demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching, their commitment to excellence in the classroom, their innovation in teaching techniques, and their commitment to students.
The 2021-2022 recipients are: Professor of Law LaJuana Davis, Instructor Laura Taaffe and Assistant Professor of Law Chinelo Dike-Minor. Davis was selected for her teaching in first-year Criminal Law and Evidence courses, Taaffe received the award for her instruction in the Lawyering and Legal Reasoning program, and Dike-Minor received the award for her teaching in upper-level Health Law and Criminal Procedure courses.
Outstanding Adjunct Award
This year, Donald M. Jackson received the Outstanding Adjunct Award for his instruction in several courses related to Sports Law. Jackson graduated from Alabama Sate University where here was a pitcher on the baseball team and Rhodes Scholarship candidate. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and is the founder of The Sports Group.
