Samford University's presidential search committee met for the first time on Sept. 17 to begin the process of finding the university's 19th president. The membership of the search committee was announced on August 31 by Samford Board of Trustees Chair William J. Stevens on behalf of a committee of former trustee board chairs charged with establishing the search process. The search committee is comprised of trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumni of the institution.
Stevens charged the committee to “identify a Christian leader for the next chapter in Samford’s history.” The 23-member committee reviewed a code of ethics in which each individual agrees to the importance of maintaining the highest ethical standards, to respect the confidentiality of the search process and to protect the rights of individuals nominated.
Members discussed an outline for the national search process. The committee has not yet developed a specific timeline, although current Samford President Andrew Westmoreland has announced his intention to retire from the presidency on June 30, 2021.
Samford constituents will have opportunities to be involved throughout the search process. Beginning the week of September 21, the committee will survey various university stakeholders to begin developing the presidential profile for evaluating candidates. Additionally, Stevens affirmed that at the appropriate time, at least three reference panels representing faculty, students and alumni will be formed to participate in the final interview process.
The committee will advertise the position in several national publications over the next several weeks and will solicit nominations from the university's constituents, including faculty, staff, alumni, students and donors. The committee also will invite chief executive officers and chief academic officers from Samford's peer institutions to nominate candidates.
