Grants Accountant II and Post Award Manager

The Grants Accountant II and Post Award Manager will have the responsibility for organizing and coordinating comprehensive financial management of the Samford University sponsored projects portfolio in the Office of Research; will work with the Office of Research team members to provide training and support to faculty and staff to ensure compliance with private, state, and grant requirements; will prepare applicable fiscal reports and develop new reports as necessary to help ensure appropriateness of expenditures and processes.

Duties include:

Financial Accounting

  • Perform budget and expense analysis, invoicing, financial reporting, and reconciliations
  • Manage grant billing as required
  • Ensure compliance with IRS regulations, cost accounting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles

Ensure Compliance with Grant Requirements

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports to granting agencies/organizations as required
  • Support required audits in the grants area
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent federal regulations and circulars as related to grants
  • Support and assist with development of institution-wide compliance programs for effort certification, subrecipient monitoring, and other fiscal compliance as needed/identified

Administration of Grants/Post Award

  • Perform labor distribution changes, re-budgeting and financial grant closeout and grant-related financial post-award functions
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports on grants for internal management purposes
  • Maintain grant documents, as appropriate, for the Office of Research
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analysis in response to requests or to provide support to administrators/faculty/staff


  • Actively participate in developing and delivering financial grants compliance training both formally and on an ad-hoc basis for administrators/faculty/staff
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • At least 3 years' work experience in higher education, governmental, or public accounting
    • Prior experience must have required decision making, analysis, and presentation skills

Qualified applicants will also be required to have the following skills, attributes, and abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with proficiency with financial software
  • Must be able to multi-task
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a university sponsored research setting
  • Working knowledge of the federal administrative requirements and cost principles contained in the Uniform Guidance, CAS, GAAP, and GAAS applicable to higher education
  • Experience using Banner Grants
