Duties

The Stagehand is responsible for assisting with the running, assembling, disassembling, and maintenance of the stage and backstage during theater productions, concerts and events.

Duties include:

  • Load and unload props and materials from trucks
  • Assemble and disassemble parts
  • Set up lighting, props, and microphones
  • Move and rearrange furniture
  • Unload and set up road cases
  • Perform spotlight operation during shows
  • Assemble and touchup set pieces
  • Set up risers and musical equipment
  • Ensure props are affixed properly as instructed by supervisors
  • Assist with video, sound, and light production
  • Disassemble sets
  • Set up flats
  • Dismantle scenery and other set pieces
  • Work with electricians and lighting assistants
  • Assist Set up lights and microphones
  • operate sound system
  • Help carpenters build and install scenery
  • Open and close curtains
  • Clean up stage and backstage area after performance
  • Operate scenery-moving machinery
  • Operate sound, lighting and video boards and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with electrical equipment and power tools
  • Experience with rigging
  • Basic carpentry skills and knowledge of mechanics

Qualified applicants will also be required to have the following skills, attributes, and abilities:

  • Read and understand stage, lighting, sound and other theatrical plots and documents
  • Ability to listen and follow instructions
  • Knowledge of stage directions and theatrical and venue terminology
  • Be aware of health and safety legislation and procedures for electrical safety, lifting and handling, disposal of hazardous waste, etc.
  • Be flexible and adaptable
  • Work effectively, safely and collaboratively with a range of different departments
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Work independently and as part of a team

  • Stamina, to work long hours
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. waist high, and able to assist with set up of furniture for events as directed throughout shift
  • Ability to move 50 lbs. of equipment
  • Ability to climb steps repeatedly
  • Ability to descend/ascend ramps and inclines/declines
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Work in a fast-paced, busy environment with environmental conditions such as noise, heights, dark/dim/absence of lighting
  • Ability to bend, stretch, reach and kneel without restriction
  • Ability to safely climb and perform duties on ladders
  • Ability to work at heights and work on catwalks
