Samford University’s Office of Greek Life presented the 2016–17 Greek Life Awards during a Feb. 21 ceremony. 

“It’s an exciting time to recognize all chapters for their continuous hard work,” said Julie Fletcher, director of greek life. “All 15 chapters at Samford are striving for excellence, and I am grateful we are able to come together and celebrate their accomplishments. The Samford greeks are inspiring and encouraging! I am hopeful that 2017 will be an even better year for our community.”

Alpha Tau Omega was named Chapter of the Year.

“It’s amazing to see the growth of those men since they are the newest fraternity on campus,” Fletcher said. 

William Hargrove, a senior political science major from Luka, Mississippi, was named Greek Man of the Year. Hargrove is a member of Alpha Tau Omega.

Lauren Hammond, a student in McWhorter School of Pharmacy from Huntsville, Alabama, was named Greek Woman of the Year. Hammond is a member of Alpha Delta Pi and served as chapter president last year.

Sigma Chi and Chi Omega won awards in Outstanding Alumni Relations and Outstanding Campus Involvement.

The Outstanding Interfraternal Relations awards were given to Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority and Phi Mu. Excellence in Values was awarded to Alpha Omicron Pi and Alpha Tau Omega. 

Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority took home awards for Outstanding Philanthropy. Pi Kappa Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha received awards for Intramural Sports. 

Sigma Chi and Zeta Tau Alpha won for Outstanding Public Relations. Delta Xi Phi Sorority and Alpha Tau Omega took home awards for Excellence in Scholarship. Sigma Chi and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority received awards for Excellence in Service.

This year’s Faculty Adviser of the Year went to Megan Mileski, assistant professor of nursing. Alumni Adviser of the Year was awarded to Denise Gregory, director of diversity and intercultural initiatives and assistant professor of chemistry. Mileski is faculty adviser for Chi Omega, and Gregory is alumni adviser for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Most Improved grade point average went to Sigma Chi, and Outstanding Membership was awarded to Lambda Chi Alpha.

Haley Schneider, a sophomore education major from Marietta, Georgia, was named Emerging Greek Leader. Schneider is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.

Greek life leaders were also recognized for their service, including Panhellenic Council President Garrison Rutledge ’16, Interfraternity Council President Zack Garner and National Pan-Hellenic Council President Ca’Dric Moulton.

Olivia Williams is a journalism and mass communication major and a news and feature writer in the Division of Marketing and Communication.
