The following updates were sent  at noon on Monday, Sept. 11, to Samford University students and employees by Harry B. Brock III, executive vice president and vice president for business and financial affairs. He also serves as the university's emergency manager.

TO STUDENTS:

Samford University will continue to observe normal hours for campus operations today and this evening.  Further, we expect normal campus operations and class schedules for Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Based on the most recent information from the National Weather Service and other information sources as of mid-morning, the sustained wind speeds for Birmingham today will be 24 mph at 4 p.m., increase to 28 mph at 6 p.m., 29 mph at 10 p.m. and start subsiding after 10 p.m. At 6 a.m. Tuesday, winds are expected to be 10 mph and will fluctuate up to 16 mph through noon.  Areas generally to our North and East will experience higher wind speeds with Gadsden, Anniston, Alexander City, and Montgomery reaching winds in the low 30s after 4 p.m. today.  Maximum gusts for the Birmingham area could be 45 mph.  Jefferson and Shelby Counties are not in the storm warning area but remain under a wind advisory from noon today to noon Tuesday.

To Commuter Students… Conditions vary across the different parts of the region where students and employees reside.  As winds increase later during the afternoon and evening and if you have concerns regarding conditions and safety in your area, whether commuting to or from campus, you should use your best judgement regarding your personal safety.  For your safety, if you feel that you must leave campus early today or not travel this evening, you should contact each of your professors to discuss your circumstances and assignments.

Unless circumstances change significantly, we do not anticipate additional updates but will provide such as needed.  Take care, be alert and drive defensively if traveling.
