The Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership is honoring eight faculty and three staff members as the center’s 2019-20 class of the Mann Fellows in Community-Based Learning. The center previously honored 11 student leaders for exemplary service during their undergraduate or graduate careers in early April. All were honored remotely via video to follow social distancing protocols due to COVID-19.

The fellows received year-long professional training and support as two select cohorts, one faculty and one staff. The cohort of faculty redesigned their courses while staff from varying units redesigned programs or projects to include community-based learning.

“I’d recommend the Mann Fellows Program because I think for a faculty member, understanding how important it is not just for you to lecture, but for your students to apply those concepts, and in a setting that makes them a little uncomfortable, can really enhance their ability to learn,” Reginald Harris, Brock School of Business assistant professor said.

In addition, senior English major Andre’A Roper was awarded the Mann Center’s Joe McDade Scholarship. The scholarship includes a one-time gift of $5,500 established by 1961 Samford alumnus Joe McDade. The recipient of the award is chosen for an outstanding demonstration of character, a high level of integrity, embodiment of Samford’s Christian mission and spirit, and contributions to the betterment of the world.

“I feel really honored. First, that I was considered for the award, but to know that I’ve won it, especially knowing the groups of students who were also in there and how incredible of people they are. It definitely helps me to feel more confident in myself and my abilities,” Roper said.
