At the start of the fall semester, I asked our students and employees to join me in focusing on the virtue of hope throughout this academic year. Christian hope is grounded in the belief that by placing our hope in God, we embrace the certainty that God is weaving our life journeys together to ultimately bring about His purposes. Samford seeks to reflect the hope we have in Christ.
This past year at Samford has confirmed my hope for the future of our university. Thanks to a transformational $100 million gift this past May from the estate of the late Marvin Mann ’54, most of which will support scholarships, countless future students will have access to a transformative Samford education.
Witnessing the incredible accomplishments of our students in the classroom, in the community and on the field of competition also makes me hopeful for the future. Students, both undergraduate and graduate, and faculty members received awards and grants for their research and academic prowess. Hundreds of students from 27 student organizations participated in Samford Gives Back, the university’s annual day of service. Our athletic teams won eight Southern Conference regular season or tournament championships. And we announced and began construction on a new 165,000-square-foot Campus Recreation, Wellness and Athletic Complex, Samford’s largest capital project to date.
This past year was full of hope. I encourage you to join me in celebrating the work of our students, faculty and staff, and also to remain hopeful in the continued growth and impact of Samford University.
