It really doesn't seem like that long ago when I was still trying to decide where I was going to attend college. My freshman year is wrapping up, so now I'm thinking about a job for this summer and my classes for the fall. It is weird to think that I am almost one-fourth of the way done with my college career. Looking back at this year, it has been an incredible journey that has been filled with many new friends and memories. It has no doubt been busy, but it has been a ton of fun.
One of the best decisions I made this year was joining a fraternity. While it is definitely not a big deal if you are not interested in joining a fraternity, I would suggest at least considering it. After the first couple weeks of school, I had twenty pledge brothers who quickly became good friends. Obviously, we are now even closer to each other than we were earlier in the year. I am really looking forward to living with my brothers and forming many more memories with them in the years to come. Also, between mixers, formals, tailgates at football games, and just hanging out, I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of Greek life.
Another thing I have spent a lot of time participating in is intramural sports. Sports have always been a large part of my life, and I wanted to continue to play them. This year, I played flag football, basketball, softball, and dodgeball. Other popular sports offered include soccer, ultimate frisbee, and even Texas Hold'em. Everyone I have talked to about intramural sports has had a great experience with them too! Whether you want to play A-league, B-league, or Co-Rec, there are numerous opportunities. Hopefully, as softball and dodgeball playoffs are currently under way, I'll have a championship T-shirt (or two) in a couple of weeks!
This year was made a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable by finding a church home. I visited about five different churches during the beginning of the year and finally chose a church family near the end of first semester. I would encourage you to try to find a church that you can be involved with and where you can meet other Birmingham college students as well. It has been great meeting students from Birmingham-Southern, UAB, and even Alabama over the course of the semester. It is definitely a good feeling to know that I have a church home where I can be active over the next 4 years of my life.
In addition to a church, I would encourage you to become involved in one of the many campus ministries. Almost everynight of the week, one of the campus ministries is meeting. These ministries are great not only for growing in your faith, but also for fostering new relationships and friendships. I have had a great experience at both RUF and Campus Outreach this year, and I plan to continue to be involved with both of these ministries in the future.
All in all, this has been a great year of Samford. I have had so many great experiences this year that I could not have possibly written about them all. Samford is truly a unique university where one can not only grow in knowledge and wisdom, but also unapologetically affirm and grow in one's faith. I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to come to Samford, and I can't wait to see what the Lord has planned for me over next three years here! I look forward to seeing all of you on campus next year!
