Samford University’s Center for Worship and the Arts has announced the recipients of the 2024-25 Engaging Worship Program. The program provides grant funding to support innovative ideas submitted by Samford faculty and staff on the topic of worship from a variety of disciplines, methods and theories. Now in its second year, the program enriches worship experiences, engages communities and inspires deeper connections between faith and artistic expression.

Sciacca Receives Alabama Council of the Arts Fellowship Grant
Geoff Sciacca, associate professor of Graphic Design at Samford University’s School of the Arts, has recently been awarded the Alabama Council of the Arts Fellowship Grant. This prestigious fellowship is designed to support and recognize the artistic achievements and professional commitment of individuals working across various disciplines, including arts education, craft, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theatre and visual arts.

On Friday, June 14 at 4 p.m., the Samford Art Gallery witnessed a remarkable event. Alan Jung, dean of Samford University's School of Health Professions, stood in awe alongside his parents as they viewed an extensive collection of paintings of his paternal grandfather, Dr. Herbert Jung, on display for the first time. This exhibition not only honored the legacy of a talented artist but also marked an emotional journey through family history.

Cowan Receives Grant to Study Youth Motivation for Worship
Nelson Cowan, director of Samford University’s Center for Worship and the Arts (CWA), was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. This grant will be used to fund an innovative study aimed at understanding the motivation behind youth participation in worship. The project seeks to explore the attitudes of young people towards diverse liturgical forms, their responses to liturgical changes and their participation in different expressions of public Christian worship.

On Sunday, April 7, two Samford University music students, Shannon Boutwell and James Powers, competed in the Alabama Music Teachers Association (AMTA) Piano Competition. Powers received honorable mention in the upper division and Boutwell secured first place in the lower division.
