Quantitative Finance Summer Institute

The Quantitative Finance Summer Institute (QFSI) aims to give high school students a practical knowledge of the quantitative and analytical methods used in modern finance. This week-long seminar, hosted on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, offers students a challenging curriculum that goes beyond basic financial market education and utilizes advanced skills sets such as calculus, data analysis, and multi-level critical thinking.

The institute explores the field of quantitative finance through a focus on equity and derivative markets. The first day provides a thorough introduction to the structure and operation of stock and option markets. Day two begins with a short background on statistics and then examines the tenets of modern portfolio theory with applications using the Capital Asset Pricing Model. On days three and four, students learn basic stock analysis from both a fundamental and technical perspective. Students will analyze various stock charts, investigate corporate financial statements, and discuss the impact of economic announcements on financial markets. By day five, students examine several trading strategies with a focus on options trading and practical execution. Finally, the institute concludes with a discussion of ethical and moral standards in financial trading and analysis.

Classes feature a variety of lectures, discussions, and group-oriented exercises all lead by expert faculty and professionals. These classes also use specific analytical software and data sources, all which are provided and freely available to students. Three daily sessions (two in the morning and one in the afternoon) are complemented by speakers, films, and other activities.

Students interested in attending QFSI should apply by April 25, 2014.  The cost of QF is $495 for the week and includes meals, housing, entrance to events, texts, a t-shirt, and transportation while at the camp. If students wish to attend GISI one week and Quantitative Finance another week, the cost for both weeks is $700.
