Former SEC Head Referee To Talk Leadership at Samford Business Network Breakfast

Former Southeastern Conference head referee Dick Burleson will talk leadership with the Samford Business Network audience at the Brock School of Business' SBN breakfast meeting Aug. 28 at 7 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency-Wynfrey Hotel.  Steve Shaw, current SEC head referee will introduce Burleson.  refThe event is sponsored by Dreamland BBQ and is free and open to the public. 

Burleson is the vice-president of Neel Schaffer, one of the largest privately held engineering firms in the Southeastern and Southwestern United States.  Burleson also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and rose to the highest rank of Major General of the largest Army Reserve Command in the world.  In addition to his engineering and military careers, he was a football official in the Southeastern Conference for 25 years where he worked a full schedule of top SEC games every year as the head referee.  He also served as chief referee of the SEC, and during his career he officiated 15 major bowl games and the SEC Championship game.  His last game on the field was the National Championship 1998 Rose Bowl game.  He now serves as an SEC staff advisor on officiating and evaluates official performances across the conference. 

"Dick's leadership philosophy is one of the key items that we focused on when choosing him to kick-off our SBN meetings this academic year," said Howard Finch, dean of the Brock School of Business. "He is not only going to share his experience officiating in the SEC, but also his experience as a Major General in the Army Reserves and as a successful corporate executive, which will be invaluable for the audience." 

At the conclusion of the breakfast, Burleson will sign his biography You Better Be Right: My 25 Years as an SEC Football Official.  The book will be available for purchase at the event. 

In correlation to this event, the Brock School of Business recently added a Sports Marketing Concentration to the curriculum, so any student who majors in one of the six business majors can get a concentration in sports marketing.  The sports marketing program begins with the fall 2013 semester.
