"A life changing experience" and "Best semester I spent in college" are common phrases Samford alumni use to describe their semester at the Daniel House in London.
The London semester is changing and getting even better, according to Director of International Studies Dr. David Shipley.
"The curricular model we used in London for twenty plus years worked very well," says Shipley. "But the needs of 21st century students and a changing world economy have forced us to refocus our efforts in London."
To be more responsive to what students need to take during their sophomore and junior years--the ideal time to go to London--Shipley says new wrinkles are being added to the London semester like:
• the option to take 12 or 16 credits in London
• the addition of Biblical Perspectives to the London semester course options
• the opportunity to have a full time internship for half the semester as part of a 12 credit load
• the move from one 12 week semester to two six-week terms.
"Students will be able to take up to eight credits each term under this plan," Shipley says. The internship will be offered second term. If a students wants to do an international internship in London, they will be limited to 12 total credits.
In addition, scholarships are now available for students studying in London for the semester. Application forms are available online and also in the International Studies Office in Brooks Hall.
Under a scholarship scenario, says Shipley, a student receiving the maximum award of scholarship money can take 12 credits in London for about $2,500 more than it costs to stay on campus for a semester. However, those 12 credits do not include an internship--which costs extra.
