Christian Solidarity Leader to Speak at Samford May 4

Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2000-04-20

Baroness Caroline Cox, United Kingdom president of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) and deputy speaker of the British House of Lords, will speak at Samford University Thursday, May 4, at 10 a.m. in Reid Chapel.

She will discuss her work with the CSW and her activism in international humanitarian and human rights work. Cox has chosen causes overlooked by the world at large, focusing her efforts on exposing injustices in Sudan, Burma, Nagorno Karabakh and Russia. Her causes have included championing the freedom of slaves in Sudan and inspiring the establishment of Russia’s first humane service for the care of orphans.

While at Samford, she will also lead a forum at 2 p.m. in Beeson Divinity Chapel and attend a reception and book signing at 4 p.m. in Davis Library. She will sign copies of her biography, Baroness Caroline Cox, A Voice for the Voiceless, by Andrew Boyd.

The public is invited to all three events.

Appointed a Life Peer by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1982 for her work in education reform and health care, she has been a deputy speaker of the House of Lords since 1985. She is a former head of the sociology department at the University of North London and former director of the Nursing Education Research Unit at the University of London, Chelsea College.

Chancellor of Bournemouth University, a vice president of the Royal College of Nursing, and president of the Institute of Administrative Management, she is the author of numerous publications on education and health care.

Cox’s Samford connection stems from the school’s London Semester Abroad program, which has placed student interns in the CSW London headquarters office.

CSW works for the religious liberty of persecuted Christians, helping others suffering repression, children in need, and victims of disaster throughout the world.
