A unique, interdisciplinary course of study to equip students to understand, analyze, and productively engage issues arising at the intersection of science and religion.
The mission of Samford University is to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith, and personhood. As a Christian university, the community fosters academic, career, and ethical competency while encouraging social and civic responsibility, and service to others.
The disconnect between the life of the mind and the life of religious faith has grown wide in modern society and has hindered productive dialogue and interaction between the church and a significant segment of the population who can see no discernable connection between the two. Besides helping students deal personally with this issue, the major will also prepare them to contribute to the science and religion dialogue (thereby helping others—the service component of the Samford mission statement).
Students will take a broad core in the sciences and humanities, then select a specific area of concentration (biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, pre-health, physics, or religion). These courses will be framed by specific courses and a senior project in science and religion.
Graduates from this program will
• understand the significance of issues arising at the intersection of science and religion.
• be knowledgeable and conversant about those topics.
• have experience discussing and writing about the issues.
• be able to critically analyze and synthesize competing theories and claims.
• possess a foundation upon which to contribute to the search for solutions.
High achieving students with significant high school backgrounds in the sciences, mathematics, and the humanities. Because this will be a unique major among American universities, we anticipate attracting students from around the country (and, indeed, potentially the world).
Where (do they end up)?
Graduates will be prepared to pursue advanced degrees in Science and Religion or in their area of specialization or related fields. Those who elect to enter the workforce will have a strong and broad background that will open the door to a variety of employment opportunities. Students who select the pre-health track will have taken the requisite courses for medical school and other health-related professions.
