Step Sing 2016
Step Sing began as a sing-along on the steps of Renfroe Hall at the Howard College East Lake Campus in 1951. It was held once a semester and soon became a competition. In 1957, Howard college moved to its present location on Lakeshore Drive, bringing with it the tradition of Step Sing. In 1976, Step Sing moved to its current home in Wright Center Concert Hall.
Under the direction of the Division of Student Affairs, Step Sing is organized by students, including musical arrangement, choreography and costume design. Step Sing has become an educational activity in which students participate through leadership development, organizational administration and time management. Students perform three days to sold-out audiences. It continues to be one of Samford's most popular traditions and is a popular event not only among students, but also prospective students, employees, alumni and the Birmingham community.

Through this year's Step Sing fundraising efforts, Samford will sponsor Kahaila Women's Projects. Kahaila Café, established in 2012, began as a church plant on Brick Lane in the heart of East London, in the form of a café with a vision to minister to the large community of people in their 20’s and 30’s. In addition to the café, Kahaila also operates three women’s projects: Luminary Bakery, Ella’s Home, and Reflex.
A social enterprise aimed at providing women opportunities to leave their vulnerable situations and gain skills to be self-sufficient. The funds raised will support fitting out a newly leased and first ever solely occupied bakery and training center. This will fund major kitchen appliances, such as a floor mixer and food processor.
A safe house providing shelter and support to women who have suffered from sexual exploitation and trafficking. The funds raised will fund furnishings for the new safe home to be opened March 2016.
A ministry working in a women’s prison in London delivering mentoring, life skills courses, and pastoral care to women. This fund would provide opportunities for 50 women in prison to receive mentorship and pastoral care.
Support your favorite Step Sing group by making a gift to the 2016 Step Sing Philanthropy. The group that raises the most funds for Kahaila Café Women's Projects will receive the Step Sing Philanthropy Award during the award presentations following Saturday's evening show.
