As we begin to welcome 141 future pharmacists to the McWhorter School of Pharmacy, we pause to reflect on the success of the previous year and the many accomplishments of the faculty, staff, students and alumni of McWhorter School of Pharmacy.  

Dean Michael Crouch provides the Top 10 Highlights from 2014-15 in his latest video and below: 

10. Fantastic First-Year Students

These students have the academic aptitude and personal qualities to transform lives through pharmacy and we are humbled that they chose us; they will undoubtedly continue our tradition of great student leaders.

9. NIH Funded School of Pharmacy

Dr. Robert Wang received an NIH grant to support his research related to a core molecular defect occurring in patients with cystic fibrosis.

8.  Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies

In May, for the first time, McWhorter School of Pharmacy awarded 126 students a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies. This degree, awarded after their second year of pharmacy school, makes them eligible for our growing number of combined degree programs; combined programs include Pharm.D./M.P.H. and Pharm.D./M.B.A.

7. Accomplishments of Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff continue to be involved in a number of scholarly, professional and service endeavors at the state, regional and national levels. In addition, during the recent annual giving campaign 100 percent of faculty and staff demonstrated their commitment to pharmacy students and programs by making a financial gift to the school.

6. Pharmacy Residency Match

Seventy-two percent of McWhorter School of Pharmacy students who applied for a residency matched with a program, exceeding the national average by nearly 10 percent.

5.   Global Engagement

In 2014, 56 students traveled abroad completing elective coursework, mission trips and advanced pharmacy practice experiences.  With experiences in Cambodia, China, Japan, Peru, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, 2015 is expected to be a record year for global engagement.

4. Engaged Student Body

In the past year, McWhorter School of Pharmacy Students provided more than 200,000 hours of service to the community. Samford’s chapters of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) received the National Community Engaged Service Award at the 2014 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting, recognizing their longstanding efforts to meet the health care needs of residents in Perry County, Ala.  

3. Personalized Pham.D. 

McWhorter School of Pharmacy remains committed to individualizing student education through innovative elective courses, certificates, research opportunities, global outreach and dual degrees. This ensures that graduates are uniquely prepared to enter the workforce—wherever they are called to practice.

2. Purchase of the East Campus Property

In late 2014, Samford completed the purchase of property adjacent to campus that will be the future home of the College of Health Sciences, including McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, School of Health Professions and School of Public Health.  The property includes 28 acres, three buildings encompassing nearly 400,000 sq. feet, and two parking garages. Plans are currently underway to renovate the interior of Building 1 and Building 2 it is expected that McWhorter School of Pharmacy will relocate to these state of the art facilities in fall 2016.

1. Commencement—the highlight of the academic year!  

On May 14, 2015, 122 students received their Doctor of Pharmacy from McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
