What do you think is the BEST thing about Cumberland School of Law?

The best thing about Cumberland is definitely the overall encouraging environment from your peers. While there is typical law school drama and stress, in general, your classmates and upperclassmen are there to help you through what will perhaps be the biggest and most challenging decision of your life thus far.

Why did you choose Cumberland School of Law?

When I toured law schools, most law school tours felt daunting and impersonal. I remember when I toured one school, albeit a reputable law school which my cousin goes to and which I respect, the tour guide’s email to us the day before stated that the tour would be 30 minutes. The tour was 27 minutes on the dot with three minutes for questions afterwards.

However, when I toured Cumberland, my tour guide was more than willing to answer any questions about the law school. For two hours, she showed off all Cumberland had to offer and told us numerous stories about relationships that Cumberland students made amongst each other, professors and staff. That is when I realized that Cumberland was where I would thrive and learn the most about a field that I had worked my whole undergraduate career to be a part of.

What do you most enjoy about studying law in Birmingham? What do you like to do in Birmingham?

I have highly enjoyed my legal internship in Birmingham. During my internship, I have both gotten to learn how parole hearings and post-parole/post-conviction procedures work. I have also learned how to read hundreds of pages of documents and retrieve what I need from those documents in a timely manner during the course of my internship as well.

My favorite thing about Birmingham is that there is plenty to do if you and your classmates are willing to put forth the effort in organizing something. Moreover, Birmingham has so many bars, restaurants, and outlets for things to do that it is easy to organize something with classmates whenever time allows.

Student Organizations/Extracurricular Activities

First Generation Lawyers, Federalist Society, Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Academic Support Advisor

If you could give any advice to your Pre-Law school self, what would you say?

My advice would be to remember why you are at Cumberland in the first place: to one day, become a lawyer and help people. Do group study sessions, interact with your classmates in class and outside of class during the school day and attend social events.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

I would like to work as a public defender in not too large but not too small of a county. I would also love to find a way to help with criminal post-conviction appeals on the side. If I can go into the office every day and know that I am helping and supporting at least one person during perhaps the bleakest and lowest point of their life, I will consider my legal education well-spent.
