As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Americans are reflecting on a legacy built on service, sacrifice and an enduring commitment to liberty. At Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, that legacy is honored not just in words, but in meaningful action through the Cumberland Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic (C‑VETS).

Since its launch in 2020, C‑VETS has served more than 1,100 veteran clients across Alabama, providing critical pro bono legal services to those who have answered the nation’s call. The clinic stands as a modern expression of a historic promise: that those who defend freedom will not be forgotten when they return home.
“Our country stands united and committed in honoring and serving our veterans who have already served us,” said assistant professor Kevin Patton, clinic supervisor and former U.S. Navy pilot. “Throughout our country’s history, veterans have answered the call to defend liberty. Cumberland’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families with a wide range of pro bono legal services helps ensure they remain proudly recognized and appreciated defenders of our freedom.”
That commitment takes shape in real, tangible ways. Through C‑VETS, law students work alongside experienced attorneys to assist veterans with a range of legal needs, often removing barriers that can impact housing, benefits and stability. In doing so, the clinic not only provides essential services, but also prepares future lawyers to lead with empathy and purpose.
As the United States prepares to mark 250 years of independence, initiatives like C‑VETS highlight how the nation’s founding ideals continue to be upheld at the local level. While history often celebrates moments on the battlefield, Cumberland’s clinic underscores another kind of service—one rooted in advocacy, dignity and justice for those who have worn the uniform.
In supporting veterans and their families, C‑VETS embodies a simple but powerful truth: honoring service is not confined to memorials or milestones. It is a living commitment—one that continues, client by client, case by case, into the next chapter of America’s story.
