Margaret Johnson Retires from School of Health Professions
After 9 years of faithful service to Samford University, Margaret Johnson retired at the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year.
Arriving in 2013, she was hired as an associate professor and the chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the School of Health Professions. Johnson retired as a full professor and chair of the same department.

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Partners with Girls Inc.
Throughout the academic year, members of our Communication Sciences and Disorders student organization, SUNSSLHA have volunteered with Girls Inc. During their annual holiday party, SUNSSLHA members collected gifts for the organization.

Samford Welcomes New Chair of Communication Sciences and Disorders Department
Samford University’s School of Health Professions has announced Angela Barber as the New Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Students Participate in Alabama Advocacy Day
Students from the undergraduate and graduate program attended Alabama’s Advocacy day meeting with state legislators to advocate for the professions of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
Speech Language Pathology Team Named Bowl Champions
Samford University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders was named Scholar’s Bowl Champions in the inaugural Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama’s (SHAA) Quest for the Cup, an intercollegiate scholar’s bowl held during the Annual SHAA Convention, Feb. 17.
Andrea Cournoyer Excels on and off the Court
In addition to her work in the classroom, women’s basketball player Andrea Cournoyer has brought home honors for Samford Female Student Athlete of the Year (2022), All-SoCon First Team (2022, 2021), SoCon Player of the Week (2022) and SoCon Player of the Year (2021).

We believe training our students in an interprofessional environment and teaching them to serve their community are crucial components of their education.
Margaret L. Johnson Scholarship
In 2018, the School of Health Professions surprised Margaret Johnson, professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, with the endowment of the Margaret L. Johnson Scholarship. This year, Bailey Upton was selected as the 2021-22 recipient.
Communication Sciences and Disorders Literacy Clinic Leaves No Student Behind
Samford University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders Literacy Clinic equips underserved students with the practical skills they need to succeed academically and professionally. The clinic is a proud partner of Samford Athletics and strives to maintain Samford’s national lead in student athlete’s graduation success rate.

Communication Science and Disorders Graduate Receives Pittman Spirit Award
Caroline Kizer has been chosen as this year’s recipient for the Pittman Spirit Award. The award recognizes a graduating senior who has exhibited a serious commitment to being a student and achieving academically, to honoring Christ, to personal health and involvement in student life.
