When 118 students in Samford University's School of Health Professions gathered in Reid Chapel for the annual Commitment to Calling Ceremony, it signified the beginning of their professional education and reflections on how they are called to use their gifts in service to others.

Earning a place in the ceremony was a remarkable achievement. Interim Dean John Petrella encouraged them to view their education as more than a path to a diploma, but as a chance to embrace a higher calling within their careers.

Students represented the Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and, for the first time, Master of Science in Performance and Applied Sport Science programs.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a wooden cross engraved with 1 Peter 4:10, the School of Health Professions' theme verse: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”

The cross serves as a powerful reminder that the knowledge and skills gained at Samford are meant to be shared in service to others. As students prepare for various professions, the ceremony highlights their shared commitment to compassionate, service-driven care.

Second-year students took the stage to share heartfelt reflections on their own first year in the program. Lily Prout from speech-language pathology, Katy Moses from physician assistant studies and Faith Fuller from physical therapy offered words of encouragement and wisdom, guiding new students as they begin their own journeys.

Students recited the School of Health Professions pledge, committing themselves to lives of compassionate service through their chosen professions. Leine Burke, from performance and applied sport science, delivered the benediction.
