Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and Oakwood University recently celebrated their ongoing academic partnership during a special media day held on Oakwood’s campus. Originally established in 2021, this accelerated law degree program—part of Cumberland’s growing network of 3+3 collaborations—continues to offer Oakwood students an innovative pathway to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in just six years, rather than the traditional seven.
“We’re excited to continue our partnership with Oakwood University, which confirms our shared vision to provide students with meaningful, accessible pathways into the legal profession,” said Blake Hudson, dean of Cumberland School of Law.
Through the 3+3 pathway, eligible Oakwood students may apply to Cumberland School of Law after three years of undergraduate course work. If accepted, their first year of law school will also serve as their final undergraduate year at Oakwood, allowing students to complete both degrees in a reduced time frame.
“This is a great avenue for our students to pursue law,” said Oakwood President Leslie Pollard. “It demonstrates our commitment to opening new doors of opportunity and preparing our students for impactful careers in law, public service and leadership.”
Cumberland School of Law also maintains 3+3 partnerships with Samford University, Austin Peay State University, the University of Montevallo, Troy University and Tuskegee University. The initiative reflects the law school’s commitment to providing student-centered academic options that reduce time and cost while maintaining academic excellence.
Oakwood University—a historically Black, Seventh-day Adventist institution—has played a key role in Cumberland’s efforts to increase diversity and representation in the legal field. The partnership aligns with both institutions’ missions to prepare students for leadership in a complex and diverse society.
Together, Cumberland and Oakwood are equipping the next generation of legal professionals with a strong academic foundation and a clear path to a meaningful legal career.
