Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2004-09-14

Samford University will host visiting Fulbright Scholar and Muslim specialist Dr. Salwa Cherif of Tunisia Sept. 27 through Oct. 22. Dr. Cherif is a participant in a special Fulbright initiative, "Direct Access to the Muslim World," which is designed to build bridges of understanding between the U.S. and Muslim countries.

Cherif, a professor of American and English literature at the University of Tunis, is an international scholar and speaker on issues related to the Muslim world. She is the first Tunisian female scholar to visit the U.S. through the initiative and Samford is the first university in Alabama to receive a visiting scholar through the initiative.

During her stay, she will lecture in academic settings and in public venues on Muslim life and culture, Tunisia history and culture, literary representations of Muslim culture, and Muslim women and the veil.

While in Birmingham, she will lecture to Samford classes in cultural perspectives, history, political science and women's studies. She will also speak at other area colleges and to church and civic groups. One of her public presentations will take place at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 in Samford's Reid Chapel. That event is free of charge and open to the public.
