International Environmental Risk Specialist To Speak At Samford

Environmental risk specialist Linda S. Spedding will speak at Samford University Thursday, Aug. 5, as part of a speakers series sponsored by Samford’s Vulcan Materials Center for Environmental Stewardship and Education.

Dr. Spedding, an international environmental risk attorney, lecturer and writer from London, England, will speak on the topic “Environment, Risk and the Corporation: A Transatlantic Dialogue” at 10 a.m. in Samford’s Sciencenter planetarium.

Her address will be followed by a panel discussion with representatives of academic, environmental, corporate and manufacturing fields.

Dr. Spedding, who specializes in environmental legal and management issues in the European Union, India and the U.S., focuses on a proactive and positive approach to corporate environmental responsibility. She advises businesses in the private and public sectors, and assists regulators in the implementation and enforcement of environmental regulations.

She is the author of the books, Transnational Legal Practice in the EEC and the United States and International Professional Practice, as well as environmental law guides. Dr. Spedding is affiliated with the Center for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society, Cardiff University.

Panelists are Willard Bowers, vice president, environmental affairs, Alabama Power Company; Pat Byington, commissioner, Alabama Department of Environmental Management; Michael DeBow, professor, Samford’s Cumberland School of Law; Dr. Hugh Floyd, chair, Samford sociology department; Joseph Howle, manager, environmental services, Southern and Gulf Coast Division, Vulcan Materials Company; and Dr. David Shipley, chair, Samford department of journalism and mass communication.

Samford professor Dr. Paul Blanchard, co-director of the Vulcan Materials Center, will moderate the discussion.
