Samford Homecoming Set for October 25

Samford University will celebrate Homecoming the weekend of Oct. 25 with reunions, special events, football game, and a performance by popular Grammy Award-winning Nickel Creek. “Memories and Milestones” is the theme of the weekend in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking for Samford’s Homewood campus.

The weekend will feature the re-institution of a Samford tradition, the Candlelight Dinner, on Friday, Oct. 24. Alumni of the Year awards will be presented at the 6 p.m. event. A dessert reception with entertainment and fireworks will follow.

Other Friday events include a golf tournament, reception for the Class of 1953 and a special Homecoming lecture presented at 2 p.m. by 1978 graduate Dr. William Dooley, professor of surgical oncology at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. All Samford graduates are invited to the inaugural meeting of the National Alumni Association at 5 p.m. in Harrison Theatre.

Saturday events include a brunch for classes of 1953 and earlier, hot air balloon rides, a children’s carnival, barbecue lunch, and open houses hosted by academic departments and campus organizations.

The Samford Bulldogs will take on Ohio Valley Conference opponent Tennessee State at 2:30 p.m. in Seibert Stadium. The Homecoming court will be introduced.

Nickel Creek, known for its eclectic mix of classic, jazz and rock sounds, will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall. Tickets are $25 and are on sale to the general public.

Weekend events conclude on Sunday, Oct. 26, with 9:30 a.m. worship service led by 1960 graduate Dr. Bill Turner, retired senior minister of South Main Baptist Church, Houston, Texas.

Pre-Homecoming weekend events include a Samford Orchestra Concert on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Wright Center and a lecture by National Cancer Institute director Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in Reid Chapel. Dr. von Eschenbach is presented as part of the J. Roderick Davis Lecture Series.
