Samford University has received a Gold Citation Award for Excellence in Educational Design in 1999 juried competition sponsored by American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase.

The Samford library renovation is among the top four projects to be profiled in the August issue of the national publication. The magazine will feature the project with color photos and accompanying article.

According to information from the publication, the featured projects exhibit the most superior features and depict the very best in educational design excellence.

Judges cited the Samford project for its excellent use of color, technology with lamp plugs, lighting, staircase, creative design for laptop access and its "great sense of place--library look."

The interior renovation was designed by the Birmingham firm of Ritchey & Associates. Architectural design was by the firm of Woollen, Molzan and Partners, Indianapolis, Ind.

Completed last year, the eight-month, $6 million renovation features a grand staircase of black granite steps and brass handrails, appropriate wiring for computer network access and ample study and meeting areas.
