Bowden to Speak at Samford Tuesday, May 2; Public Invited
Bobby Bowden, coach of the national champion Florida State University football team, will speak at his alma mater, Samford University, Tuesday, May 2.
Bowden will address students as part of Samford's convocation series in Reid Chapel at 10 a.m. The public is invited free.
Samford will present its famous 1953 graduate with a memento of his time at then-Howard College, marking his years as a student, football player and coach.
Reared only a few blocks from the school's old East Lake campus, Bowden played football at Howard during 1950-52, earning All-Dixie Conference honors twice and being named Little All-America in 1952. He played quarterback.
Bowden returned as head football coach in 1959, coaching through the 1962 season. He compiled a 31-6 record, the highest win percentage (.838) in Samford history, and his teams outscored opponents, 1,057 points to 318.
