Samford to Graduate 300 Seniors Dec. 16
Dr. J. Claude Bennett, M.D., president and chief operating officer of BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, will speak at Samford University's fall graduation exercises Saturday, Dec. 16.
Nearly 300 seniors will receive diplomas during the 10 a.m. ceremonies in Wright Center Concert Hall.
Bennett, a nationally recognized academician and clinical researcher, is a 1954 Samford graduate. He joined BioCryst in December, 1996, after serving as president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham for three years. He previously was chairman and professor of UAB's Department of Medicine.
From 1996 to 1997, Bennett was president of the Association of American Physicians and a member of the National Institute of Health's Magnuson Clinical Center Board of Governors. He is co-editor of the Cecil Textbook of Medicine and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Medicine. He sits on the visiting committee of Harvard Medical School and continues to hold the position of Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at UAB.
BioCryst is a small, publicly traded pharmaceutical company in Birmingham that utilizes a powerful technology for rapid and efficient drug development. The company focuses on the development of pharmaceuticals for the treatment of infectious, inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases and disorders.
A reception for graduates and their families will be held in the main dining hall of Samford's Beeson University Center immediately following the graduation ceremonies.
