British minister, broadcaster and writer Rev. Richard Bewes will be the featured speaker for the William E. Conger, Jr. Lectures on Biblical Preaching Feb. 20-22 at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University. Rev. Bewes, rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, England, has served that church since 1983. The church is an all-age, multi-denominational church that sees some 2,500 worshipers each Sunday.
The worship service and lectures, open to the public at no charge, will be held at 11 a.m. each day in Beeson Divinity Chapel. Topics are "There Never Was a King Like This Before" (Matthew 21:1-17) on Tuesday, "The Romance of Preaching" on Wednesday and "The Relevance of Preaching" on Thursday. A discussion luncheon with Rev. Bewes on Wednesday is available by reservation at a cost of $5 per person. For more information, call Beeson's Office of External Relations at (205) 726-2398.
Following the Wednesday lecture, Rev. Bewes will announce the North American release of his new book and video series, The Essential Bible Truth Treasury. Published by Gateway Films/Vision Video, Worcester, Penn., the program is the largest and most exhaustive Bible study series the company has released to date. The 10-videotape collection features 60 15-minute programs as well as a corresponding leatherette bound manual and journal. The series is designed for personal, small group, or classroom use, and is applicable to new believers as well as mature Christians. The videos feature well-known preachers, teachers and theologians from around the world, including Rev. Bewes, who explore the major themes of the Bible. As a special feature to introduce this new Bible study program, Gateway Films/Vision Video will provide a copy of the companion book to each attendee at the Wednesday lecture. The complete series will be available for purchase at the Beeson Book Shop, located in Divinity Hall.
Bewes, a graduate of Cambridge University, has assisted in the work of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for many years, and chaired Dr. Graham's last series of London meetings. He has written 17 books, including Biblical Preaching, which is used as a text at 120 seminaries and Bible colleges worldwide.
Beeson Divinity School, founded in 1988 through the benevolence of Ralph Waldo Beeson, provides quality theological education in a Christian university context from an explicitly evangelical perspective. The school offers three degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, and Doctor of Ministry.
The William E. Conger, Jr. Lectures on Biblical Preaching are made possible through the generosity of Colonel and Mrs. William E. Conger, Jr., who endowed this lectureship to recapture the vision of biblical preaching in the church.
