Opelika Businessman Doug Horn Presents Nursing Award Honoring His Mother

Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2010-04-28

Samford University nursing student Vivian Myers has received the annual Rebecca Lawson Horn Award, presented by Opelika business leader Doug Horn in memory of his mother at a nursing school awards ceremony.

Horn, owner of Doug Horn Roofing and Contracting Company of Opelika, established the award in 2008 to honor the memory of his mother, a 1938 graduate of Samford’s Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing and lifelong nurse who died in 1989.

Doug Horn also holds a nursing degree.  While he was a student, he was selected by his peers as the student they would most like to care for them.  That experience inspired him to create the award honoring his mother.

“It is an honor for a student to be chosen by his or her classmates for outstanding clinical care and compassion,” said nursing school Dean Nena Sanders, “and even more special that they are presented the award by its founder.  We are grateful that Doug continues to honor one of our students with this award.”

Myers, a senior in the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, is the daughter of Myra and Cliff Myers of Panama City Beach, Fla.

Horn speaks to the students each year about the value of commitment to nursing.  Rebecca Lawson Horn’s nursing cape, diploma and historical photos are on display in Samford’s Beeson Center for the Healing Arts.
