While writing this note, I am fortunate to be attending the Alabama State Bar Annual Meeting, and I am very excited to host an in-person alumni reception. The year 2020 and COVID-19 gave us a new appreciation for community, and I was thrilled to learn that a record number of alumni registered to attend.
Especially during this time, I’m reminded that as the years fly by and things change, the spirit of our Cumberland mission stays constant and is exemplified by our alumni. It is not simply given lip service, but rather, meaningful contributions are made. For example, after leading as president, Bob Methvin ’94 is passing the gavel to the next president of the state bar, and numerous alumni are continuing their service in a variety of ways such as leading sections, speaking, and participating on committees. The conference program lists many Cumberland lawyers who are presenting, such as, Judge Martha Cook ’96, Cam Ward ’96, Jeremy Richter ’12, Hilaire Armstrong ’16, Judge Joel Dubina ’73, and Marc James Ayers ’98. These alumni are serving by sharing their expertise. Others support our legal community and the state bar simply as annual registrants—any of whom are already prolific in their respective practices. Yet, they attend because there is always more to learn, they have colleagues to support, and they believe in the value of showing up. Notably, Roy Gonas ’69, traveled from his home in Miami, Florida, to support the Alabama State Bar conference because it is one of several, very important communities to him.
It was fantastic to see alumni from all over the state, including Judges Durward, Carroll, Minor, Floyd, Kemmer, Cook and others; the young and senior attorneys who attended to listen and learn, support their friends, their colleagues and their community. Jacqueline Austin ’68, of Wetumpka, Alabama, was honored by receiving the Maud McClure Kelly Award from the Women’s Section of the Alabama State Bar. Her dedication to serve her community in Elmore County, Alabama, over the last 53 years is largely unmatched. She persevered and succeeded during times of greater gender and racial inequality. Her legacy is one of profound service.
In 2022, we will celebrate Cumberland School of Law’s 175th anniversary. In the following pages of this issue, we share just a few ways you can help us commemorate this milestone and other information is forthcoming.
