Music

The Samford University Academy of the Arts Music offers a well-rounded musical experience for students of all ages. Emphasis is placed on performance, technique, theory, composition and appreciation in the disciplines of piano and voice. Private and class instruction are supplemented by frequent recitals and special events.

Enjoy reading the attached information below focused on the success of the graduates from our program. We feel blessed and honored to have played a role in the musical studies of so many who have continued their studies and contributions to music after receiving instruction through our department.

Piano

Preschool Piano (4-5 years old)

Classes for those beginning piano study uses the Faber Preschool Piano Method books with CD to form the core of an exciting music program designed for older 4, 5 , and 6 year olds who have not begun first grade. Very young students learn music fundamentals in a positive and creative environment where games and fun musical activities reinforce basic concepts. Students participate in a weekly 30-minute class (students perform for each other and concepts are introduced and reinforced) and a 15-minute private lesson (focuses more on the actual playing of the pieces and reviewing as needed). Class size is small, and parents are required to attend the class and lesson. $396 for 15-week course

Private Instruction

Private Piano Lessons (5 years–adult)

Students can choose between 30-, 45-, or 60-minute private lessons, with 30-minute lessons recommended for beginners.
30-minute private    $489 (15 weeks)
45-minute private    $678 (15 weeks)

Lessons are available Monday through Friday.

Group Piano Classes

Adult Group Piano for Beginners - Level 1

Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano, but never had the chance?  Here is your perfect opportunity. This 60-minute course is great for adult students beginning piano studies. Class meets for 10 weeks in our new piano lab.

Class offered with five students enrolled.   $300 for 10-week course

Award-winning Students

Academy piano students have won at the state auditions for the Alabama Music Teachers Association. They also represent our program at many universities and colleges throughout the United States as piano performance, piano pedagogy, and music education majors. Students have also participated in the local Alabama Federation of Music Clubs hymn and solo auditions receiving superior ratings.

Performance Practices

These are informal performances/mini master classes where students come on a day prior to the recital to perform for an academy music instructor and other students playing that day.  This is a fantastic way for private teachers, students and parents to be able to make some last minute corrections before the “big” performance at the recital.

Strings

Violin & Cello

Based on the methodologies of Shinichi Suzuki, Paul Rolland, and Mimi Zweig, students ages 4 and up will study violin or cello studies in a nurturing environment consisting of parent, child, and teacher.  Student and parent will meet with the instructor before classes start for a brief orientation. Private lessons will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time between instructor and parent.

Cello students will need:

Cello, bow, case, rosin, cleaning cloth, rock stop, three-ring binder, music.

Violin students will need:

Violin, bow, case, rosin, cleaning cloth, shoulder rest, three-ring binder, music.

Private Lessons

Theory

Musicianship Classes

These classes offer a time for the presentation and reinforcement of music theory, composition, history, appreciation, ear training and performance. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in a musicianship class geared to their age and level of ability. Games and fun activities reinforce musical concepts. Students who are taking private lessons are eligible for musicianship classes, which meet for 30 minutes weekly. 

Musicianship (Grades 1–12)

This class covers written theory, Alabama Music Teachers Association [AMTA] theory, keyboard harmony and ensemble playing. Students must be enrolled in academy private lessons to take this class.

Voice

Private Instruction

Private Instruction in Voice is available to students from age 10 through adults at all levels. Students are able to focus on their specific aspects of vocal technique, repertoire and performance.

Award-Winning Students

Academy vocal students have won on the state and regional auditions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. They also represent our program at many universities and colleges throughout the southeast as vocal performance, music education, musical theatre and theatre majors. 

Students have also participated in the local Alabama Federation of Music Clubs auditions, receiving superior ratings. Many of our vocal students have participated in local musicals and operas sponsored by institutions including Samford University, Red Mountain Theatre and high schools.
