Through coursework, internships and professional experiences, Samford’s healthcare administration program gives students a strong foundation for careers in healthcare.

Samford University’s Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration prepares students for leadership roles across the healthcare industry through academic preparation, hands-on experience and professional development.

What sets the program apart?

Housed in the Department of Healthcare Administration and Informatics, the program combines Samford’s commitment to Christian faith and values with a focus on ethical, servant leadership.

Carol Ratcliffe, program director and professor, shares what sets the program apart, how students prepare for careers in healthcare, and where a Samford degree can lead.

“Our program is based on a deep commitment to ethical and servant leadership by preparing students to be workforce ready,” Ratcliffe said. Students can also earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Healthcare Administration in as little as five years or add a minor in health informatics and analytics.

How does the program prepare students for leadership?

The program blends foundational coursework with opportunities to learn directly from healthcare professionals.

“Our vision is to prepare influential and visionary healthcare professionals who make a positive impact on their communities,” Ratcliffe said. Faculty bring professional experience and industry connections into the classroom, helping students develop leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

What hands-on experiences do students gain?

Students complete two required 120-hour internships at different organizations, totaling 240 hours of practical experience, twice the minimum required by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.

These experiences helpgive students gain a competitive advantage as they begin their careers. Abby Juillerat ’25 was selected for a competitive postgraduate fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, reflecting the real-world preparation students gain through the program.

Where are graduates working?

Graduates have launched careers in medical sales, health analytics, insurance, physician practice, medical residency programs, long-term care and patient advocacy.

For Halle Cloud, MHA ’21, her Samford education provided the foundation for a career in healthcare leadership. Now director of business operations for the Surgical Institute of Alabama and Swaid Clinic, she helps streamline operations and improve the patient experience.

“My education and experiences at Samford University provided the foundation for my career,” Cloud said.
