Cameron Hellgeth, a senior management major, is the owner of Camco Media and an affiliate in the Samford Startup student business incubator program. His business specializes in short-video content creation and marketing, with viral TikTok success in sports edits.
What is the story of your company? How did it start?
During COVID-19 in 2020, I was running low on entertainment outlets. In response to this boredom, I turned to TikTok. Surprisingly, I ended up going “viral” multiple times for sports edits. I was featured on major accounts such as 247Sports, Overtime, and Best Celebrations. Now, I specialize in short-video content creation marketing for other businesses.
Why did you want to join the Samford Startup program?
I wanted to be a part of Samford Startup because of my passion to develop my entrepreneurial mind. This is often difficult to foster in the classroom, so I desired to be a part of a club that would help me in this endeavor.
How has the Samford Startup Program supported your business?
Samford Startup has surrounded me with like-minded individuals who share the same passions and struggles that I do. Being able to talk about ideas and problem-solve unique scenarios is an experience that is not offered everywhere. In addition, the speakers that Dr. Mazzei brings in to mentor us are second to none.
What has been the most challenging part of launching your business? How did you overcome this?
The most challenging part of launching my business was the “perfectionist” mindset that I fell victim to. This point of view often thwarts multiple good ideas. I’ve learned that simply “doing” rather than succumbing to passive tendencies has been my best friend in overcoming this obstacle.
How has the Samford Startup program helped you grow professionally?
Samford Startup has taught me to take on the mindset of a professional. This mindset can only be gained through experience, not in the classroom. My mind has grown through interactions with my peers and mentors that contribute to this club.
How has the Samford Startup program helped you achieve or exceed your business goals?
Samford Startup has helped me overcome conflicts that take place in my mind. I believe that if my mindset is correct, then the trivial obstacles will take care of themselves. Having a professor such as Dr. Mazzei to fall back on for guidance has been my biggest aid throughout this process.
Looking to the future, what do you envision for your business?
In the future, I hope to transition into merchandising for other businesses as part of their marketing approaches.
How do you see your company having an impact on the Samford and Birmingham communities?
I see my company impacting my peers and classmates. Hopefully, my actions will persuade and encourage others around me to take risks by starting businesses that revolve around their passions.
Why would you encourage other student entrepreneurs to also join the program?
I would encourage other student entrepreneurs to join the program because of the experience that is offered that cannot be gained in the classroom. The fellowship between the members of our cohort fosters creativity, innovation, and growth.
