Leah Henderlong, a junior marketing major at Samford University, is the owner of Styled with Leah. What started as a fun project for a friend quickly turned into a growing jewelry business fueled by her love for design and entrepreneurship.
What is the story of your company? How did it start?
I’ve always wanted to create a small business and have had a passion for the entrepreneurial world. I started my business in July 2024 after a friend was heading to Costa Rica for a few weeks. I wanted to make her a fun, tropical necklace for her trip. She shared photos of it on Instagram, and after that, people started messaging me wanting one too. From there, things took off, and it’s been such an exciting journey ever since.
Why did you want to join Samford Startup?
I wanted to join Samford Startup because I believe it’s important to have community when you’re working toward a goal. Having people around you who understand your vision and can help you grow makes all the difference.
How has Samford Startup supported your business?
The program has already given me so many helpful connections. I’ve met people who have offered advice, encouragement and support that are helping me think about my business in new ways.
What has been the most challenging part of launching your business? How did you overcome this?
The most challenging part hasn’t been launching my business but staying financially stable as it continues to grow.
How has the Samford Startup program helped you grow professionally?
I just joined the program this year, so I’m still getting started. I’m excited to see how it will help me develop professionally and give me the tools to take my business further.
What do you envision for your business?
I hope to eventually sell my products in stores and grow the business into something even bigger.
How is your business redemptive in a Christ-like manner?
As a Christian, I aim to approach everything I do with faith, knowing I can’t accomplish it without God. My company’s verse, Psalm 16:6, “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance,” reminds me to find joy in the blessings I’ve been given and to remain grateful for every opportunity.
How do you see your company having an impact on the Samford and Birmingham communities?
I see my company impacting Samford and Birmingham by showing that through Jesus and determination, you can turn your goals into reality.
Why would you encourage other student entrepreneurs to join the program?
I would encourage other student entrepreneurs to join the Samford Startup program because it’s an amazing opportunity. You’re surrounded by people who think like you, support your ideas, and want to see you succeed.
