Brock School of Business's accounting program continues to rank among the nation's top programs, earning an 80.8% first-time pass rate on the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam, according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).
The result significantly exceeded both state and national averages. Nationally, candidates achieved a first-time pass rate of 60.2%, while Alabama candidates recorded a 65.2% pass rate. Samford students outperformed the national average by 20.6 percentage points, and their scores were #1 in the state of Alabama—besting the state average by 15.6 percentage points.
The results build on the program's longstanding success. In NASBA's most recent national rankings, Samford was recognized among the top 5% of accounting programs in the country based on first-time CPA Exam performance. The program's latest 80.8% pass rate marks an improvement over its previous 76% rate, further strengthening its national standing.
"This continued success reflects the dedication of our accounting faculty and the exceptional commitment of our students," said William Belski, associate professor of accounting. "An 80.8% first-time pass rate demonstrates both the rigor of our program and our students' readiness to succeed in the accounting profession."
"In accounting, there is no greater measure of a program's quality than success on the CPA Exam," said Brad Lail, dean of Brock School of Business. "Passing the exam requires significant effort over a sustained period of time, and I congratulate our students on this outstanding achievement. Our accounting faculty work together to create a program that prepares students not only for the rigor of the CPA Exam but also to make an impact in the workplace. Together, our faculty and students have elevated the reputation of Brock School of Business as we strive to lead in our respective fields with Christ-like preparedness."
Often considered one of the most challenging professional certification exams in business, the CPA Exam requires candidates to demonstrate mastery of accounting, auditing, taxation and business concepts.
"This achievement is a testament to the strength of our program and the personalized attention students receive through our small class sizes," said Michelle Newberry, assistant professor of accounting. "Our faculty are deeply invested in student success, and it is rewarding to see that commitment reflected in these outcomes."
In addition to its first-time results, Samford reported a 71.9% overall CPA Exam pass rate, compared to 52.5% nationally and 58.6% across Alabama. The program recorded the highest overall pass rate among Alabama universities.
"We are incredibly proud of our students and faculty for continuing to produce results that reflect the quality of a Brock School accounting education," said Cynthia Frownfelter-Lohrke, chair of the Department of Accounting. "These outcomes demonstrate our commitment to preparing graduates who are ready to excel in the accounting profession."
The achievement further highlights Brock School of Business's commitment to academic excellence and career preparation, equipping students with the knowledge, skills and professional competencies needed for long-term success in the accounting profession.
