Samford University’s Brock School of Business announced key leadership appointments for the 2025–26 academic year. Marci Johns, senior associate provost, has been named interim dean, and Sara McCarty, Margaret Gage Bush Distinguished Professor of Economics, has been appointed associate dean, effective July 1.
These appointments come as Chad Carson prepares to step down from his role as dean of Brock School of Business after 14 years of distinguished administrative service. Under Carson’s leadership, the school experienced significant growth in enrollment, launched new academic initiatives and strengthened connections with the business community, all while remaining steadfast in its mission to develop Christ-centered business leaders.
Johns, who currently serves as Samford’s senior associate provost and liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College, brings a wealth of leadership experience in academic affairs and higher education accreditation. She joined Samford in 2015 after serving 16 years at Faulkner University, where she was vice president for academic affairs and a professor of criminal justice and legal studies.
A licensed attorney, Johns has worked with the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals and in private legal practice. Her expertise spans higher education administration, regulatory compliance, academic strategic planning, faculty development and student academic support, making her exceptionally equipped to lead Brock School of Business through this time of transition.
“I’m honored to step into this role and support the school’s continued pursuit of academic excellence and Christ-centered purpose,” said Johns. “The work being done here by faculty, staff and students is inspiring, and I look forward to helping it continue to flourish.”
Joining her in leadership is McCarty, Margaret Gage Bush Distinguished Professor of Economics and coordinator of the Brock Scholars program. She is widely recognized across campus for her commitment to academic rigor, student mentorship and service to the university.
McCarty holds a PhD in economics from the University of Maryland and is widely published in the areas of public policy, philanthropy, education and behavioral economics. Her research has been presented at major international conferences, and her excellence in teaching and scholarship has earned her multiple Brock School of Business faculty awards.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to serve in this new capacity,” McCarty said. “Brock School of Business has a strong foundation, and I look forward to working alongside our faculty, staff, and students to build on it in meaningful ways.”
With experienced leaders in place and an upcoming national search for dean, Brock School of Business is well-positioned to continue its legacy of excellence while preparing boldly for the future. The national search will take place during the 2025-2026 academic year, with the new dean expected to assume the role on July 1, 2026.
