A unique summer day camp at Samford University July 14-25 will give Birmingham-area elementary and middle school students a chance to do as the Romans did.

Samford’s Department of Classics is partnering with Ascanius: The Youth Classics Institute to offer LatinSummer, the oldest and largest program of its type in the nation. The camp grades one through seven will be held 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. weekdays.

This will be LatinSummer’s second year in Alabama, but an all-new curriculum for 2014 welcomes both new and returning students. Participants will enjoy exciting classes in mythology, various aspects of Roman culture and even the Latin language. Hands-on activities will include carving inscriptions, building models, playing language games and creating Roman clothing.

As the LatinSummer students learn about Latin and classical studies, they will also enhance their knowledge of other subject areas and explore how the ancient Roman world has shaped our modern world.

LatinSummer Birmingham is taught by a team of college and high school students as well as certified teachers: Mary Shelton Hornsby of Mountain Brook High School; Olivia Jones of the Altamont School; Anna Michaels of Vestavia Hills High School; Kristen Mitchell of the University of Alabama; Jacob Sansom of Mountain Brook High School. Drew Lasater of Mountain Brook High School and Paige Receveur of The Ohio State University serve as Directors. Samford Classics professor Shannon Flynt serves as Local Coordinator and Lisa Yeager as Faculty Trainer.
