Alabama Baptist Foundation Scholarships

The Alabama Baptist Foundation offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships for qualified residents of Alabama.

Guffin Memorial Scholarship

The Guffin Memorial Scholarship, honoring the tremendous contribution made by Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert Guffin to Samford University and to the Lord’s work, is awarded to worthy black ministerial students entering the Samford as regular students or as enrollees of the extension program of the University.

Julius and Martha Avery Fund

The Julius and Martha Avery Grant-In-Aid Fund provides needs-based grants to : Baptist ministerial students, with first preference given to Southern Baptist students. National Baptist ministerial students may also be considered.

Jim and Ann Bruner Endowed Scholarship

The Jim and Ann Bruner Endowed Scholarship for Ministerial Students reflects Dr. Jim Bruner’s gratitude for the help he was given as a student at Samford and his commitment to helping other students with a similar calling. It is a needs-based award to be given to pre-ministerial students who demonstrate tenacity in their pre-ministerial studies.

The Dr. James Barnette Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. James Barnette Endowed Scholarship–honoring Samford’s beloved alumnus, professor and former campus minister–is awarded to students in the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies who have expressed interest in ministry or missions careers, and who have significant financial need.

Michael & Laura Duduit Scholarship

The Michael & Laura Duduit Scholarship Fund provides awards to students pursuing studies leading to pastoral service.

John & Lillian Holcomb Scholarship

The John and Lillian Holcomb Ministerial Scholarship is awarded to junior and/or senior ministerial students on the basis of need, scholarship and potential.

The Hull Scholarship for Lay Leaders

The Hull Scholarship for Lay Leaders is for ;Christian men and women who will engage the theological and ethical challenges of the day as teachers, writers, professionals, or leaders in their faith traditions. It will be awarded to students who are actively pursuing a major or minor in the departments of Biblical and Religious Studies, Christian Ministry or Worship and the Arts in addition to one other university department.

Ova Nigg Memorial Scholarship

The Ova W. Nigg Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to a young minister-to-be who has demonstrated financial need according to approved university guidelines.

Roland Riggins Endowed Scholarship

The Roland Rush Riggins Endowed Scholarship Fund, honoring Rev. Riggins, is awarded to students with good scholastic records, and is not limited to students who meet financial needs guidelines. The scholarship may be renewed up to two additional academic years (with a limit of three academic years), provided the student remains in good academic and disciplinary standing.

W.T. Edwards Endowed Scholarship

The W.T. Edwards Endowed Scholarship, is awarded in honor of this former religion professor’s guidance, open-mindedness, and enthusiasm in nurturing students through their developmental stages in college.

John & Jessica Loftis Scholarship

The John and Jessica Loftis Scholarship is awarded with preference to qualified students in Biblical Studies in Metro College.

Philip Lynn Payne Ministerial Scholarship

The Philip Lynn Payne Ministerial Scholarship is awarded to ministerial students.

Hubert Fisher Memorial Scholarship

The Hubert Fisher Memorial Scholarship, honors Samford alumnus Major Hubert B. Fisher. It is awarded to student preparing for full-time Christian ministry or missions.

Elmore Scholarship

The Elmore Scholarship, honoring William Granade Elmore, Sr., and William Granade Elmore, Jr., is awarded with preference for ministerial or missionary students based on the merits of good scholarship, character, and worthiness or need.

Claude E. Matthews Scholarship

The Claude E. Matthews Scholarship aids young men and women studying at Samford University based on financial need and promise of quality academic performance. The grant may be renewed based on a continuing financial need and maintenance of a grade point of 2.0 or higher.

Patillo Scholarship Fund

The Patillo Scholarship Fund is awarded on the basis of need, scholarship and character, with preference for students in the fields of journalism and religion.

Dr. Sigurd F. Bryan Scholarship

The Dr. Sigurd F. Bryan Scholarship, honoring a former religion and philosophy professor, is awarded to any student of the Department of Religion pursuing a future as a pastor or missionary.

Abrams Scholarship

The Abrams Scholarship honors Relius and Blanche Louise Abrams. Mr. and Mrs. Abrams were longtime members of Ensley Baptist Church. It is awarded to students majoring in religion.

Herschel H. Hobbs Scholarship

The Herschel H. Hobbs Scholarship was established by South Roebuck Baptist Church to honor the native Alabamian who served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, preacher on the Baptist Hour and chair of the committee that prepared the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. The scholarship is given to students in the Department of Biblical and Religious studies who are preparing for the Christian ministry.

The Herbert McCullough Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded based on faculty recommendation.

Ronald L. Jenkins Research Fellow Scholarship

The Ronald L. Jenkins Research Fellow Scholarship is awarded for summer research with departmental faculty.

The W. Mike Howell Scholarship is awarded for summer research with departmental faculty.

DeLoach Scholarship

Dr. Will DeLoach, the Samford alumnus for whom this scholarship is named, was a chemistry professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Lovin Scholarship

This scholarship is named for John Lovin, an adjunct instructor in the School of Pharmacy in the 1960s and 1970s.

Pilcher Scholarship

The Pilcher Scholarship honors Dr. Robert Pilcher, a chemistry professor from 1959 to 1966.

Wilcox Scholarship

Dr. Harold Wilcox, chemistry professor from 1939 to 1947, is honored with this scholarship.

Xan Scholarship

This scholarship bears the name of Dr. John Xan, chemistry professor from 1930 to 1954.

Mabry Lunceford Scholarship

The Mabry Lunceford Scholarship, honoring a former Samford religion and philosophy professor, is awarded on the basis of merit and need.

Mae E. Flynt Travel Scholarship

The Mae E. Flynt Travel Scholarship is awarded to help students participate in Classics Department programs in Greece and Italy.

Bishop Guild Scholarship

The Bishop Guild Scholarship honors former Samford debate coach Brad Bishop.

Department Scholarships

The Department of Communication and Media scholarships are based on ACT scores, high school grades, volunteer work and participation in media-related clubs. They can be renewed each year the student maintains a 3.5 or better grade point average and is involved with Samford student media.

The Margaret O’Bryan Brodnax Endowed Scholarship Fund for Excellence in Writing honors retired English professor Margaret O’Bryan Brodnax, a provocative and provoking and stimulating and inspiring teacher who was vigilant in demanding excellence from her student’s writing, whose generosity allows us to make this award to a first or second year student whose accomplishments show promise in scholarly writing.

Gaines S. Dobbins English Scholarship Fund

The Gaines S. Dobbins English Scholarship Fund, honoring a prominent leader in Southern Baptist life, is awarded to a worthy student who is an English major pursuing a career in English.

Myrtis Tureman Kurz Scholarship

The Myrtis Tureman Kurz Scholarship honors the beloved former English professor.

English Department Scholarship for London Studies

The English Department Scholarship for London Studies is awarded to make possible an enriching literary experience in London for a deserving English major.

David Ingram Purser, Sr., and David Ingram Purser, Jr., Scholarship

The David Ingram Purser, Sr., and David Ingram Purser, Jr., Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of a Southern Baptist minister and active supporter of Howard College who served significant and strategic churches in the Alabama Baptist State Convention.

James L. Treadway Memorial Scholarship

The James L. Treadway Memorial Scholarship, honoring a popular and beloved teacher who died tragically in mid-career, is awarded to English majors whose scholarship and character are outstanding.

Joseph L. And Dora Evelyn King Scholarship

The Joseph L. And Dora Evelyn King Scholarship, honoring a beloved teacher of English, is awarded to a student on the basis of academic achievement.

The English Faculty Scholarship is awarded by English Department faculty to the student or students the faculty especially wish to recognize and honor.

Charles T.Workman Creative Writing Award

The Charles T. Workman Creative Writing Award is presented to a deserving English major in the department’s Creative Writing concentration.

Dean Percy Pratt Burns Scholarship

The Dean Percy Pratt Burns Scholarship is awarded in memory of a former head of the department of English and Dean of Howard College.

Pat Murphy Courington Scholarship for an English Major

The Pat Murphy Courington Scholarship is awarded to deserving English majors from high schools in Albertville, Boaz, Sardis City, Crossville, Geraldine, Asbury or Douglas.

James M. and Mildred Ray Hire Scholarship

The James M. and Mildred Ray Hire Scholarship is awarded to an English major known for scholarship, character and worthiness.

Lizette Van Gelder Mitchell Endowed Scholarship

Bobbie Armstrong Floyd Scholarship

The Bobbie Armstrong Floyd Scholarship is awarded annually to a sociology major with senior standing who has a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the major and a 2.5 grade point average in all academic work taken. The amount of the award is based on the market performance during the year.

William Samuel Tynes Scholarship

The Tynes Scholarship, in memory of Samford geography alumnus William Samuel Tynes (2003), is awarded annually to a geography major of good standing. As a GIS specialist in the United States Army, Mr. Tynes served honorably with the 320th Engineering Topographic G2 Terrain Company in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This scholarship is created in remembrance of his life, his perseverance, and to inspire and assist other Geography majors who express exceptional service and dedication to Samford geography.

History Scholarships

George V. Irons Scholarships

These scholarships are given in honor of the late Distinguished Professor of History, Dr. George V. Irons from a generous bequest of the late Stanley Brooks Russell, Class of 1928, and additional gifts by others. Awarded on the basis of academic qualifications and need, these scholarships provide financial assistance to students who are registered majors in the Department of History.

Nancy C. Lipham Scholarships

These are prestigious scholarships established by alumna, Nancy C. Lipham, Class of 1976. Ms. Lipham is a financial advisor with Wells Fargo in Anniston, Alabama.

David M. and Jean Buchanan Vess Scholarships

These scholarships are given in honor of the late Distinguished Professor of History and chair of the department of history, David M. Vess, Class of 1948, and his wife, former Samford registrar, Jean Buchanan Vess.

The Grace Hicks Ezell Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students studying Spanish.

The Wheeler Hawley Award is awarded to outstanding juniors studying French or German.
