Annie DeVries came to Samford after previously holding teaching positions at the University of Alabama and Birmingham-Southern College. Her professional interests include global and comparative history, imperialism, modern Egypt, the modern Middle East, and women’s and gender history. Her first book, Maadi: The Making and Unmaking of a Cairo Suburb, 1879-1962, is forthcoming from the American University in Cairo Press in the Spring of 2021. She is currently working on a new project about innovations in green energy in early-twentieth century Cairo. She also leads a digital history project on the history of the Homewood neighborhood of Rosedale, called the Rosedale Memory Project. Annie enjoys traveling near and far, hiking, knitting, and simply spending time with her husband, Stephen, a food and travel photographer, and their daughter Lily.
