Scotty Moates is a graduate of Auburn University Montgomery with a B.S. in Environmental Science and a graduate of Samford University with a M.S. in Environmental Management. He has 20 years of environmental compliance experience, including 10 years in the natural gas pipeline industry, six years in the chemical and aerospace industry and four years of regulatory experience with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

Moates teaches the Energy and the Environment (ENVM 529) course for Samford's online Master of Sciences in Environmental Management program, and works with students on independent research projects in the energy field. The ENVM 529 course examines several critical topics of global importance associated with our increasing use of resource consumption and its impact on our environment. Core subjects of energy, with respect to basic concepts, resources, applications and problems of current interest are explored, while considering the impacts of conventional and renewable energy production and consumption on the natural environment, human health and economics.
