Often remembered as the "Father of Prison Reform," John Howard transformed from an English country squire into a pioneering humanitarian whose Christian faith inspired a lifelong mission to improve prison conditions and advocate for justice throughout Europe.
Dr. David Chapman, professor emeritus of English and former dean of Howard College of Arts and Sciences, will examine Howard's enduring influence and consider what John Howard's life and Christian witness mean for Samford University today. Drawing on years of research—including visits to significant sites connected to Howard's life—Chapman offers a unique perspective on the man whose name continues to shape the mission and identity of Howard College.
This special convocation is part of Howard College of Arts and Sciences' celebration of the 300th anniversary of John Howard's birth. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community are invited to attend this free public event.
