Kit Johnson is a licensed architect and brings 34 years of professional experience in the practice of architecture to Samford University. Before joining Samford, he was serving his second term as City Architect for the City of Austin, Texas—serving in that role a total of seven-and-a-half years.  He has also served two years as the University Architect for St. Edward’s University and was the founding principal of two architecture firms—Hailey | Johnson Architects and Architecture 365, Inc.

As a licensed architect he has designed over one million square feet of commercial, ecclesiastical and residential space with 800,000 square feet constructed to date. Early in his career he worked under talented architects at Overland Partners and Lake | Flato in San Antonio, as well as BCV in San Francisco. 

In addition to his professional experience as an architect, Kit has taught architecture two years at the college level and has lectured at the University of Texas in Austin, Austin Community College, Universidad Mariano Galvez de Guatemala Facultad de Arquitectura, Texas Society of Architects, AIA National and AIA Austin as well as numerous business and neighborhood groups in and around Austin. 

Johnson is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Architecture, a LEED accredited professional, a member of the Congress for New Urbanism and has served on the board of AIA Austin for five years. 

He is married to Debra Johnson—a licensed interior designer, his business partner and best friend of 34 years. They are the proud parents of two adult sons.
