The School of the Arts said goodbye to 57 impressive men and women on Saturday that have already begun to make a difference in our world. They have designed spaces for those in need in the Dominican Republic, premiered a newly commissioned opera, won accolades internationally and nationally at competitions and most importantly, shown their desire to make the world a better place.
As we close this academic year, we are thankful for all of the impactful work of our students, faculty and staff. From 100% participation by our faculty and staff in giving back to our programs to many new scholarships that have been established, we are humbled by generosity of those around us. Additionally, we have received more than half a million dollars in grant support.
New initiatives, curriculum, accreditations and expansions continue to make our program stronger and better. Catalyst enters its third year with the iCatalyst initiative connecting our community with iPads. The BFA in Theatre for Youth received full accreditation from the National Association of School of Theatre (NAST). Christian Ministry became a department, enrolled 9 students and expects at least 11 more in the fall, moved into new offices and hired two additional faculty members. New faculty are joining this summer to develop curricula in Digital Arts and Music Production.
Our students and faculty have impressed audiences near and far. Collaborative recitals, ensemble performances, an elite piano showcase, the addition of a new annual Christmas concert, gallery exhibitions, and theatre and opera productions demonstrated Samford’s talent to more than 40,000 individuals this year.
The Academy of the Arts served our community and provided a teaching lab for our students. Each year, the Academy offers camps, private instruction and classes in art, music and antiques that enrich the Birmingham area and introduce many individuals to Samford University.
This summer we plan to prepare for a large incoming class thanks to the hard work of our recruitment team and faculty. We anticipate capital improvements, assessment work and hiring of new faculty members. Our exciting 2019-20 event season is right around the corner.
