Allison Hepola joined the Samford philosophy department in 2011.She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and majored in philosophy as an undergraduate at Notre Dame.  She received her Ph.D. from Rutgers, where she wrote a dissertation on the metaphysical issues surrounding literary interpretation.  Her areas of specialization are metaphysics and aesthetics with a particular focus on the intersection of these two domains – i.e., the ontology of art, the ontology of literature, and the ontology of fictional characters. In the near future, she hopes to begin exploring the many philosophical issues raised by religious art: what distinguishes it from non-religious art, the relationship of beauty to religious art, and whether it is possible or desirable to take disinterested pleasure in religious art.Additionally, Dr. Hepola has a strong side interest in philosophy of religion, particularly issues of divine foreknowledge, free will, and theological fatalism.
